Punjab Completes 957 of 1,000 Modern Anganwadi Centres Under ₹100 Crore Project
Punjab has completed 957 of 1,000 modern Anganwadi centres under a Rs 100 crore project. Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur outlines plans to improve child nutrition, pre-primary education, healthcare and women's welfare.
The initiative, launched by the Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, aims to provide children with a safe environment, better nutrition and access to early childhood education. The project is intended to strengthen social infrastructure at the village level, with a particular focus on the welfare of children and women.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Anganwadi centres are being constructed under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme through coordination with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The Punjab government has allocated a budget of Rs 100 crore for the project.
According to the minister, the modern Anganwadi centres will provide improved facilities for pre-primary education, supplementary nutrition, health check-ups, developmental monitoring and other essential services. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and young children are also expected to benefit from improved services through these centres.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Punjab government, under Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, has made the welfare of children and women a top priority. She emphasised that the initiative goes beyond constructing buildings, describing it as an effort to lay a strong foundation for the safe, healthy and bright future of young children across the state.
The government aims to ensure that every child receives better nutrition, pre-primary education and childcare facilities within their own village. The objective is to enable children to access equal opportunities for development from the earliest stages of life.
Appealing for public participation, Dr. Baljit Kaur urged parents, Panchayati Raj institutions and the wider community to contribute actively to the maintenance and effective use of the Anganwadi centres. She said community involvement would help these facilities function more effectively as centres for children's education, nutrition and overall development.
The minister said the initiative reflects the Punjab government's commitment to child development, women's empowerment and social welfare. With 957 of the planned 1,000 centres completed, the project marks a significant step towards strengthening village-level services for children and women and advancing the vision of a healthy, educated and empowered 'Rangla Punjab'.
